Have you purchased your electric scooter yet? It sounds funny, doesn’t it? An electric scooter? Yes, it’s a battery powered scooter. No, there is no electric cord, just in case you were wondering. And, no, it is not necessarily one of the scooters you see advertised on television for people who can’t get around on their own, quite to the contrary, today’s scooters are for the very active people who are looking to get around in a hurry. Of course, all of this depends on the type of scooter you choose.

I guess most people remember the scooter’s of their youth. You remember, a wheel in the front, a wheel in the back, handle bars and a place for one foot while you “powered” the scooter with your other foot. What is called an electric scooter today is a long way from that, however the object is the same, it gives one person the ability to get around from one place to another. The best part is, even though they have the same appearance as the scooter you remember, today’s scooters are battery powered. Depending on the manufacturer, battery life and speed varies, but some scooters can travel at 12mph to 15mph and will take you about 20 miles.

Today’s electric scooters or battery powered scooters come in many varieties. There are the stand up scooter types modeled after the scooters of your youth, then there are similar models that also come with a seat. After those, there are scooters that have wheels left and right, rather than front and rear. They have a platform to stand on along with handle bars with which to turn. Some of these models are strictly two wheelers, while other models have one or two additional smaller wheels for those of us who enjoy the sense of better balance. One of the really cool models are those that have much smaller wheels and no handle bars. Talk about “hands free”! These scooters fold down and have a handle with which to carry it when the need arises.

Finally, there are scooters that are used by law enforcement, post offices, security companies or in special event situations. Scooters for these purposes allow one to not only be visible above the crowd, but also to see above the crowd in a 360 degree fashion. Because they are so visible, they get through crowds in a hurry.
